Welcome to Caught Thread Handed!
I’m Gwen Hendrix. I live in Oxford, Connecticut, with my woodworking artist husband, Wayne.
Primarily an abstract painter & mixed media artist, my fiber art journey began in January 2012 when my aunt, Elizabeth Busch, invited me to take her 2 week art quilt workshop that August at Haystack Mountain School of Crafts in Deer Isle, Maine. The challenge — I didn’t know how to sew — or anything about making quilts, or the art quilt world. So~ I purchased a 1961 Singer Rockeeter 500A sewing machine on eBay, found a top-notch seamstress (Ann Galvin of Danbury, CT) to take sewing lessons from, and I was on my way. The Haystack experience opened up the rabbit hole that is the fiber world, and I’ve been tumbling ever since.
I belong to the Surface Design Association of Connecticut; a member of FiberWorks, a collective of talented women fiber & mixed media artists based in Newtown, CT; studied weaving with Master Weaver Barbara Hurley in her Easton, CT studio (2012-2014), and am a graduate of Jane Dunnewold‘s 2015 ArtCloth Mastery Program, a 2-1/2 year surface design intensive based in her studio in San Antonio, TX.
My studio is located at the NEST Arts Factory in Bridgeport, CT.
